Experience Brings Hurricane Victims’ Plight to Forefront

New Port Richey, FL – A new church and state-of-the-art home now stand as symbols of hope in New Orleans thanks to builders like Gallagher Family Homes.  Gallagher representatives worked through snow flurries, rain showers and crunch deadlines to finish the structures as part of ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.

One of eight builders selected nationwide to complete the project, the Gallagher contingent included plumbers, framers, carpenters, painters, roofers and landscapers.  Team leader Craig Gallagher was in charge of scheduling for the church, and he expected to be inspired by the experience.  What he didn’t foresee was the plight Katrina victims still face more than two years after the storm. 

“The whole Makeover experience hit our team on physical and emotional levels,” Gallagher says.  “We worked on a tight timeline, and all around us we witnessed devastation.”

No stranger to hurricane relief, Gallagher spearheaded the development of K-Jobs Command Center, a clearinghouse which helps those relocating due to storm devastation find construction jobs in the Tampa Bay area.  Now, he sees a need for a complete refocusing of construction efforts back to Louisiana.

Throughout the 18-hour Makeover days, though, the team focus was on the task at hand.  The construction experts finished the church in a staggering five days.  Six days later, with the house completed as well, a mass held in the new church rounded out the experience.

“We brought some much-needed pride to Florida’s construction industry through the team’s hard work, and hopefully people will be inspired to offer further help to Katrina victims when they see the show,” Gallagher says.

The Extreme Makeover: Home Edition two-hour finale concludes the show’s 50-state tour and will air May 18 on ABC.
